In 2001 I was diagnosed with acromegaly. What's that, you ask? It's a rare hormone disorder, often referred to as insidious because the onset is so gradual. Acromegaly means big hands and feet in Greek. It's caused by excessive growth hormone secreted by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland which causes enlargement of the bones and soft tissues. It's often misdiagnosed. I had microsurgery to remove the tumor on September 11, 2001 (yes, that September 11th!). For more information check WebMD.
